Letter from the President
Dear Chamber members,

After 35 years in the newspaper business it will come as no surprise to hear I recommend you read your daily newspaper!!!  Of importance to all of us is information in the Wall Street Journal today on page A12, 'The Small Business Surtax'.

Chairman of the Ways and Means Committee Charlie Rangel has disclosed new taxes on small business starting at a gross income of $280,000. If you wish a copy of the editorial give me a call.

Port of Oakland

The Port of Oakland leads the way to improve air quality:

Low-cost financing: On July 7, the Port Board authorized the executive director to negotiate and enter into a financing assistance agreement with OneCalifornia Bank to provide low-cost financing and related services to drayage truck drivers and companies. OneCalifornia Bank will provide low-interest loans to truck owners and companies to pay for replacement CARB-compliant trucks.

Stimulus funding for trucks: The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency recently announced, the Bay Area Air Quality Management District (BAAQMD) was selected for $2 million in funding to retrofit 81 trucks with diesel particulate filters and to replace 22 dirty, old trucks with cleaner, newer ones that operate at and around the Port of Oakland.

Certification seminars

The Chamber and Employers Group have agreed to offer a series of free seminars for our members that will offer certification. The program will begin Sept. 8 and run weekly through Oct. 27. The Human Resources Generalist Certificate program has everything you need. With a focus on the most critical issues of HR, this series better prepares those newer to HR to effectively handle the issues they face on a daily basis. The program is geared to individuals who are new to HR (less than three years of experience). Learn more here and contact Morgan Crow at mcrow@oaklandchamber.com to register.

City parking

The City Council has approved a 50-cent increase in metered parking rates in Oakland, which raises the rate to $2 per hour. The Council has also approved an extension of the parking enforcement time to 8 p.m. These new rates are already in effect.

God bless America!
